Board games are an essential part of Indian culture. One such game is the ‘Golokdham’ game; its origins are unknown, however, in the late-nineteenth century, printer and publisher, Tara Chand Das and Sons started printing the game for commercialisation. The game board “Nava Golokdham Khela” was first printed at the Tara Art Press, Ahiritola in North Calcutta. The board was a new version of an earlier Checkerboard adorned with arrays of mythological prints. These beautiful prints were made using engraved wood blocks made by the skilled artists of the famous Battala in late-nineteenth-century Calcutta. The game represents the journey of human life, travelling through various places and finally reaching the final square, “Golokdham”, representing the abode of Lord Krishna.
